Douglas Cole was born on July 25, 1934, in New York, New York to Ronald and Helen Cole. Cole studied at the University of Vienna, the University of Notre Dame and Princeton University, earning a Ph.D. in English from Princeton in 1961. He began teaching in 1960, and came to Northwestern as a full professor in 1969.
